It starts and finishes at Okehampton Camp, where teams of six complete a 35, 45 or 55 mile route, dependent on their age and ability. Participants are expected to be self-sufficient from the start at 7am on the Saturday until they return by the 5pm deadline on the Sunday. If the whole team returns before the deadline they are awarded a team certificate as well as individual medals.
Training takes place in the Autumn and Spring Terms and requires pupils to commit to a number of day and overnight walks to ensure that they are fully prepared for the event. Participants need a thorough understanding of map and compass work, camp craft, first aid, safety procedures and teamwork.
